Perfectly Flawed

This is a 1959 MG MGA 1600, and I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking: “what a lovely example of a classic British roadster, produced between 1955 and 1962 in Abingdon, England until it was eventually replaced by the similarly pleasant MG MGB.” Okay, in fairness you may be thinking: “Who the hell are you?    You’re never on Facebook!” But I digress.
This car is indeed a charming example of what British auto manufacturers could do in the brief intervals in which they weren’t on strike or out to lunch. This MGA is the 1600 model, which means it benefited from an updated 1588cc four cylinder developing 78 horsepower routed through a four speed manual. 78 horsepower may not seem like much, but this was the late 50s and early 60s, and cars were much lighter then. This car, for example, was only about an Ikea cupboard away from a ton. That’s so light in car terms that MG actually had to offer optional ballast in the form of sandbags on the 1962 models because they kept floating off into the clouds. And that’s completely true.

It also allowed the company to claim a top speed of 98 miles per hour, which could be achieved only if you were a certified insane maniac. You see, cars of this era, especially small two-seaters like the MGA, were not known for their safety or stability at speed, which made high-velocities quite the way to go through several pairs of pants very quickly.

But despite the power output, and the terrible danger, I still want an MGA. The way it was parked at the curb, the way it caught the fading daylight was just “right” in a way that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Is it flawed? Absolutely. Will the electrics misfire as British cars are known to do and burn to the ground? Probably. But in the end, that doesn’t stop me from wanting one.

The MGA is an interesting car in that its faults are what give it character. This is not an appliance to take you from point A to B. This is a car for weekend getaways, for beach days, and for nights on the town. And it’s perfect.
Additional Thoughts:
-To clarify, MG is the company that made the car, MGA is the specific model.
-Convertible MGA’s didn’t have door handles on the outside! There was a cord on the inside of the door you had to pull to open it from the outside. Hardtop MGA’s did have handles on the outside though.
